Manager of Pet Shop Boys Dies in a Car Crash in Moscow

Dainton Connell
MOSCOW - Friday, October 5, 2007, early morning -- Dainton Connell, manager of the famous British band the Pet Shop Boys, died in a car crash on the Moscow River Embankment (Embankment of Taras Shevchenko). Mr. Connell was in a car with Anton Antonov, owner of a famous elite "invitation-only" Moscow club “Roof of the World”. Thursday night, Chris Lowe, member of the famous duo, was celebrating his birthday at the Sky Lounge Restaurant. Mr. Antonov and Mr. Lowe met several years ago in St. Petersburg and became very good friends.
After the birthday party, Mr. Antonov wanted to show his night club to Dainton Connell. Mr. Antonov’s BMW 525 was going 100 miles an hour when he lost control of the car on a wet road, and the vehicle crashed into a tree. The impact was of such force that after the car took out the tree, the vehicle demolished a cast-iron railing and plunged into the river. Moscow Transportation officials were working near the site of the accident, and together with police, ambulance crew and a team of divers, they retrieved the car from the river relatively fast. However, it was too late – the driver and the passenger were dead. The police records mention two victims: “a 20 y.o. Russian citizen from St. Petersburg and an Afro-American, approximately 40 y.o.” update: According to the medical records, the deaths were instant and were caused by the first impact of the vehicle with the tree.
The Pet Shop Boys have sold more than 50 million records worldwide and are best known for their remake of the Soviet anthem “Go West” and other hits such as “West End Girls”, “Always on My Mind”, “It’s a Sin”, etc.
Russia Blog expresses deepest sympathy to the band’s relatives, friends and fans.
"Thank you to everybody who has posted comment about my dad. It is with great regret and sadness that I Tiffany Connell the Bear's first born, thats what he called me. My family and I are devastated by the loss of such a terrific man. Daddy, I miss you so much, we all do love you see you in heaven." Tiffany.
Please, visit the extended post to watch band’s music videos and read the band's reaction to the tragedy.

Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant are "devastated" by this tragic news. They had known Dainton for almost 20 years. "Dainton was a warm, kind, loveable friend, a huge Arsenal fan and a larger-than-life character, famous in North London and beyond. We are devastated by his sudden and tragic death and our thoughts and condolences are with his wife, Mandy, and their family."Dainton (also known as "The Bear") accompanied Pet Shop Boys on their tours from 1989 to 2000. He can be seen in the videos for Pet Shop Boys' singles, "Jealousy", "So Hard" and "Was It Worth It?" as well as in the Somewhere concert film. We know that he was a familiar and friendly face to many PSB fans who encountered him over the years and that they will share in our grief and sorrow. Those who met him will never forget him.

update:
Dear Commenters, editors of the Russia Blog, who have enjoyed PSB music and videos for years just like you, are touched by your sincere and overwhelming response. I was shocked by the news.
Being a PSB fan for many years i was lucky to meet Dainton in 1998 - he was really charming, nice and kind to us, "small fans".
Thank you, dear Dainton, for all your work and kindness.
Rest in peace.
God, please, take care of his family, just as he took care of PSB throughout all theese years.
We will miss you, Dainton.

May he rest in peace and his family and friends remember him always and honour his memory.

Good grief... I work too much, I never heard of this gentleman... My condolences go out to his family.
But @ the Russia Blog they are posts and comments about police or government officials driving and creating accidents and killing people...
To this, I would say Western countries are no different than CIS. Their are so many tragedies in all countries, so many good people that are lost...
But, driving 100 miles an hour, this is too much... Thank goodness nobody no pedestrians were hurt.
I never heard of Mr. Connell but it looks like many people @ RB have been saddened by this loss.
Everyone in every country needs to drive carefully, and this is yet another example that Russia has become a member of the world as a place that has the same issues and problems as the west.
My condolences also go out to the driver and his family. But 100 miles per hour seems a little excessive, even if this was Diana in France.
RIP

"The Bear" A legend in his own rights. As has been said by many others on this site, you will be missed enormously friend. I have never come across an individual who has such a presence amongst his fellow peers and offered the same respect that he was always given. Dainton your spirit will live on forever more. These words are reitterated by all your friends from the Manor House area.

Whether on the terraces in pubs or in clubs
At parties in the streets, or at your door
Everyone recognised that great bear roar.
Great times sadly missed

To Mandy, Tiffany and Linsey (if you are reading this)
I cannot imagine the impact to you and the girls. I hope that over time you can deal with this and find some comfort and solace . He was a unique, extra-ordinary warm man that we will all miss greatly and are glad to have shared time with. This gives us all some very small insight into your loss but to me your sense of grief is still unfathomable.
Take care

To The Bear,
I’ve countless memories of you from our time together at London Luggage. You were definitely the prankster of the shop, you always made me laugh. Whether it was getting me to go looking for jellied ell or skyhooks on my 1st day or doing your famous bear dance, you always had the ability to lighten the mood.
You always let your presence be known in the shop and it will never be the same now you’re not with us. You had an impact wherever you went and was the life of a party, that’s why you were so well liked and will be missed so much.
You were larger than life and your passing was a shock but I can guarantee you’re up there making a lot of other people laugh and I hope they enjoy your company as much as I know myself and so many people did.
My thoughts are with Mandy, Tiff, Harley and Lindsay and all that loved you. Rest is peace Dainton, we will not forget you (how could we!) you were true legend. Love Georgia (Ginge) xxxxx

Dear Dainton,
What can I say. I've only known you at work for one year but had heard so much about you over the years.I knew you would live up to my expectations of you from the minute I arrived at London Luggage .Who else could wind me up by telling me on my first minute there that I was being sent to another store and to wait by his stool.Who else could send me for a 35p stick of cheese to M&S which took all my lunch hour.Who else on my 2nd day could hide the shop keys in my bag whilst everyone was looking for them.Only you Dainton. I miss you already, even though everyday you use to turn the music over to radio and get me into all sorts of trouble with Des for the bad reception. Who's Gonna say 'Mavro Mavro','Argh Mate','Jump on the jack jacq','Give us a Chin','My first born','Flynnmaster & Riddler','Your From the saarf'. I am so glad to have known you and I will be proud to cover you on the door whenever I am asked. Your family will have so many memories of you cos you were larger than life itself. My heart goes out to Mandy,Lindsey,Tiff & Harley (Baby bear) And all your family who loved you so very much.
RIP Dainton All my love Jacqui x

dear mandy - the girls - monty,franny,gaps
its so hard to take when you learn that someone who you hold with the upmost respect for is tragically taken away in a breath.
knowing you all for years,i address this to you because having known the man - spent times with you all, through highs and lows Iknow its hit you the hardest.
well, wot can i say about the
"grroober"
he was not only a freind,he was a lesson for us all. you could think of him, and without any shadow of a doubt say "yes" "D" and nod and to understand him.
he is the only person in my life that i could say that he laughed everyday.anyone who was lucky to know D should be grateful for the freindship he gave us all.
I am honered to say i shared a great deal with him - from gypos flying through windows,to laughing our tits off on the gas & air.I saw the family man also - so true people who really knew him,can understand when i say geniune.
in his life he gave us all a lesson.
he lived his life to the full.I am proud to say DENTON - MY FRIEND
ALSO - derek, marcy my deepest thoughts go to you both.

Nearly every day we would argue about something at work - sometimes to the point where he wanted to kill me - but it would always end up in a hug, kiss and laugh.
The last time I spoke to u, u were surrounded but Spurs at Heathrow, telling me that they were giving u the eye, but this was 8.30am on my day off and I'm sure u only really rang to wake me up, knowing I'd still be asleep.
What I wouldn't give for a call now.
Now every day I open the shop and dont really know what to do, there is no one here to wind me up the way u do and I'm on autopilot most of the time, as are the rest of the staff.
It is only when u know that someone is not going to b there anymore that u really start to appreciate just how u miss him and the fun and happiness this man generated everyday.
You were a wonderful person and I am proud to have had the pleasure to know u and call u a true friend.
My deepest sympathy goes out to Mandy, Tiffany, Linsey and his Mum, brothers and sisters and all his family
God bless you D

Husband,
Dad,
Grandad,
Brother,
Son,
Uncle,
Nephew,
Cousin,
Friend,
Whatever your relationship, however you knew him, the man was a legend, an icon, a star.
Taken from us all far too early.
My thoughts are with, not just family, but with everybody who was lucky enough to have known "The Bear".
I was lucky enough to have known Denton, and I'm gutted that I will never see him again.
Gutted as I'm sure everybody is that I never got to say goodbye, but I'm sure he's looking down at us all now, just grinning, with immense pride realising how much he was loved.
R.I.P big man.
You are sadly missed

I've had the absolute pleasure of knowing the big cuddly bear (as i called him) for 5 years.ive got so many stories to tell, but the one that i will always remember about him is,i always have my ipod on in the shop (london luggage). he always hated it when i had it on, despised is the word i would use actually. he always used to say "leigh's music again, its all girlie stuff" and would try to sneak behind the counter to turn it off, because he knew i would bite his fingers off, and i would tell him to go away, and he would stand there all serious- well try to cos i would get so annoyed at him, and he will try not to laugh at me and he would stand there and say to me "is it because im white" and i would say to him, yes it is, now go away. and he would walk away in stitches because he would always laugh at his own jokes. and i was going through my ipod the other week, and there is a song called "play that funky music white boy" and everytime i will listen to it, i will think of that big cuddly teddy bear.
sorry to have written an essay, but i could carry on, as there were so many stories to tell.
I wouldnt have it any other way, then to have known Denton for 5 years of my life, a friend or the best story teller in the world. i miss you big guy. say hello to everyone up there. And make them laugh, like you always made me laugh.
my thoughts and love to Mandy, Tiffany, Lindsey, Harley and the rest of the family.

I was Denton's teacher at the Wood Green Youth centre 30 years ago. It was my first job as a young teacher and I was given this small group of 15/16 year old boys in a small unit outside the mainstream school, after school and Denton had gone their own ways. I remember him telling me about his early years in the North East. I had no idea that he was still local until I saw his huge funeral procession while I was on a bus down the Holloway Road, then picked up a copy of the Tribune. I really wish I had had the opportunity to reconnect with him, he really did achieve a lot in his life. I'm still a local teacher in Islington now. My best wishes and heartfelt sympathies to his family.

Could not, and still cant grasp the fact that we will never see or hear denton again, could not get in touch mand and girls as didnt know what or how much to say, what is there to say, the tears and nods and glances say it all. Denton meant as you know a great deal to our family in a lot of ways, and when we lost a cousin a few years ago we found he had been one of dentons best friends from long way up until scott died, the rest is personal, but denton thankyou, you know what for. We will never forget you, you will always be in our hearts, and minds, there will never ever be a replacement of any sorts, they broke the mould as they say. Miss you, always will. and denton i took your advice, thankyou.P.x
see you again one day. xxxxxxx
