Getting Your View of Russia from The Simpsons?

"The Soviet Union? I thought you guys broke up."
"Yes, that's what we wanted you to think...hahahaha!"

Recent reports about Russia remind me of this old "Simpsons" episode. Is the Evil Empire really coming back? We don't think so. However, some Western politicians, think tank scholars, and even some of our readers seem to believe this. Enjoy the video!

So let me see if I understand: People who disagree with you are morons who get their information from cartoons, while you are brilliant geniuses who know the "real truth" because you get your information from sources like . . . state-owned Russia Today. Right?

Lenard (or should I say Kim Zigfield?)
That was a quick response. Thanks for reminding me why I wanted to post this, and thank you for reading Russia Blog!

Charles Ganske

Dear Lenard Daulton,

No, people who believe every word that is written in the newspapers and said on TV are not morons. You call them 'propaganda victims', have you forgotten?

Try to learn about life in Russia from first-hand sources, this might help you not to write so much bullshit about Russia as 'state-owned'.

Touché!

As I discovered quite a long time ago at the beginning of the Balkans debacle, a little bit of knowledge goes a long way and ususally causes an awful lot of damage!

Thanks for the video. I have not found one person who believes Russia is the communist Soviet Union in hibernation who has been there since the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Quite humorous Charles.

Now, can we get back to the hard core political viewpoints which made this site special?

I note how others recently addressed this as well.

Lenard, "state-owned Russia Today" has made some stupid decisions. This does not negate the stupidity found at other media operations.

What's 'Russia Today'??? I believe 99,99% of Russians don't give a shazen of what 'Russia Today' is. ;)

Nah, I get my views from here, a bit more subtle presentation:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mvy6zvFE2Do&mode=related&search=

Regretfully Pitari, that number (if true) might be higher among non-Russians.

So, what's the purpose for having it then? To give some privleged people jobs?

Don't get me wrong, there's a definite need for having a powerfully alternative media to offset the biases found in English language mass media.

It has to be done in the most effective way for it to succeed.

That clip is a classic. While relations between the West and Russia will likely sour in the near future due to disputes over energy and foreign policy, I take solace in the fact that no matter how bad it gets, it will never get to the point where the policy of "Mutually Assured Destruction" will be implemented again.

I think it is inevitable that the US and Russia will become economic rivals. However, it is doubtful that we will become enemies. It will kind of be like the relationship that the US has with France, only there will at least be some grudging respect for Russia, unlike the French, whom most Americans think are just smelly, hopeless losers.

Well Russia is not Soviet Union and Soviet Union was evil empire just as much US-of-A was.

Still I see Russia coming back as an important factor in energetic domain.

Thanx for the Simpsons...

hi! there is no way Russia will EVER go back to the way it was pre-cold war. Russia in my blind American eyes is a country with an internal power struggle. Where do Americans begin to become concerned? When the Kremlin whacks our? / your? Oligarchs right in front of the world in our countries. Incidentally, Russia has us to thank for its new found wealth for cutting off N.Korea and China from oil. Now Russia can pump Dagestan dry and sell it to them to prevent our own selfish ideas of ... (dramatic pause) Globalization. Or, in the FSB's eyes... our aggrandizement. Oh Yuri, how about returning an email buddy? We want to talk to you about Kerimov.

P.S. When the rebels fired the SAM at Senator McCain's escort from Dagestan it was muffled in U.S. press. Why? There's a whole lot of stuff we want to talk to you about... who is this outfit you are with? Why in English? You know, once the bush era is over, and it practically is now, you know we're going to be friends again right?

P.S. is Romano Prodi still giving Putin b*** j***? Inquiring English, French, Italian, and American minds want to know...

sincerely,

GreenZooey
your American in Grozny, Prague, the Ukraine, Turkey, Iraq, and god damn... where am I not at these days...?

see ya in cyberspace

:)

I like what you guys are doing. You've got balls.

p.s. Yuri, if you are having communication security issues... we can help. I do not work for ANY government anymore. I won't be going back to work until the Bush era is over. Still, I find you interesting, and we are interested in Russia. I'm not asking for anything ridiculous, but i have some very general questions about Russian opinions and politics. I don't get it. I want a "real" Russian to talk to. send me one. You know how to find me. Seriously, just a basic interview from a russian about culture, ideas, and nothing unordinary.

Get this to Yuri. thanks.

Hi.

As Charles has already brought up La Russophobe, I thought he and the others might be interested in the following over at eXile.ru:

http://www.exile.ru/2006-January-26/who_is_la_russophobe.html

Great prizes!

That guy has an easy time unlike some others having a Russocentric view which isn't anti-Western, racist or terrorist and is being politically censored at some highly promoted/funded English language venues.

This is why the coverage of Russia sucks. A joint interest between the not so Russia friendly officialdom and some court appointed Russia friendlys. The latter not seeking to have others take the "thunder" away from them.

Don't for a moment believe that everything you read at Russia Profile or Johnson's Russia List is the best of analysis on the FSU.

No reason. Just 14 comments would look better than 13 (in a paranoid Stephen King kind of way).

Good stuff BTW.

Yes Mike.

I have to believe that there are some good people in positions of authority who can help change things. If true, they need to act now.

Unity becomes strength when the unity is exhibited.

Dear Greenzooey,

I am sorry if I ingored your e-mails. The last three months have been very busy with travel and fundraising. Feel free to give me a call or e-mail me again. It's always busy, but it is very easy to find me - yuri@discovery.org and phone is on www. discovery.org.

Thanks for reading us!
Yuri

Since this thread has gone off topic, I always thought La Russophobe was from Finland, not sure why though. Kim's writing doesn't strike me as coming from a native speaker of English. The grammer is too rushed and breathless. Then again, maybe its just the crazyness coming through.

Also, I can't imagine a Brit, Yank, Aussie, or Canuck ever having that big of a chip on their shoulder towards Russia, considering these countries were never occupied by the Russian empire.

Jason:

Many people from those countries could be of a given ethhnic background which has had historic differences with Russia.

Then, there're many who have been greatly influenced by them.

The continued censorshp of intelligently presented Russocentric views in the Eng. language doesn't help to improve the situation.

It's an absolute disgrace what's currently going on. The wasted money/efforts in the name of improving Russia's image.

So true Misha.

Jason, over @ http://seansrusskiiblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/andrei-vlasovs-legacy.html, La Russophobe just made another ass of itself.

****** with the wrong company is a big mistake that the very stupid continuously make.

Will visit Mishka in a moment.

Hopefully, this site will see the light.

Playing puppet to the substandard is not advancing progress.

That is a fact.

Funny how naive the person who wrote this sounds now... SIMPSONS WAS RIGHT!!! COLD WAR 2 STARTED TODAY!!! BUSH V. PUTIN
