Russia Blog Comments Policy

Dear Readers,

We are delighted to see the increased traffic and comments on Russia Blog. We welcome your comments and open discussions, however, we reserve the right to edit or delete comments deemed obscene, libelous, or completely irrelevant to Russia/former USSR. We manually approve comments sent to us via email, so sometimes it takes several minutes or hours before the comments appear on the blog. This is a tool to eliminate spam, not to censor content.

Also, you are welcome to submit your articles as some of our permanent readers have done. If they meet our language and content requirements, we’ll be glad to post them.

Thanks for reading Russia Blog!

Kim,

That's how software works. I wish it had been different. I spend a lot of time simply approving the comments.

Bad kharma was present.

One and only one person ignited it.

I'm glad to see how others responded.

Time to move on with some more Russia Blog features.

Following up on Alexandra's point, I received this thought posted elsewhere:

"From experience - If one participant files a complaint, only the post in question is erased -- supposing the manager agrees. For a poster to be banned, he/she must either have been extremely rude, or is the victim of a concerted complaint. The manager is usually unwilling to discuss the deletion of posts. A useful advice: don't allow yourself to get provoked by characters who's aim is your disappearance."

Andrew,
I have generally allowed all comments, except for spam (there is one frequent spambot that pretends to be a live poster) and pure vitriol (i.e. you or so and so is a Nazi, Stalinist, etc.)

People are free to say whatever they want about Russia or the wide world, but I don't like it when they personally attack other readers. At that point, the comments that were supposed to attract readership end up repulsing them when one person gets obsessive.

I would like to comment that I have again enjoyed following the blog and its readers' comments. For a while it was seemingly overrun with negativity and a virulent public feud between one individual and the rest of the cyber-world. I think all of you know what I am referring to. I enjoy intelligent thoughtful responses and insight. I abhor personal attacks and comments that do little to promote positive interactions and perspectives.
